'I thought it was a really tight game; somehow in a game when we didn’t give them a chance, we’ve contrived to lose three nil'

Chris Nelson from Radio Belper Town spoke to manager Lee Attenborough after Tuesday’s defeat at Pontefract.

I thought it was a really tight game; somehow in a game when we didn’t give them a chance, we’ve contrived to lose three nil. That’s the way things have gone for us over the last two weeks.

I genuinely don’t think there’s much in it. I can’t remember being carved open once or giving a massive amount of chances or shots. We got caught in no-man’s land for the first two and a free kick for the third.

That’s the way things have gone for us over the last couple of weeks and obviously we’ve fell short these last three or four games and it’s been disappointing when we’ve been rock solid all season.

We got ourselves in a good position even to the end of March, but it’s been a little bit too much for us. This back log at the end of the season means the lads are running on empty, even I’m tired and these boys have run 90 minutes.

These boys have played week in week out; played with knocks, played out of position and we’ve got two academy lads on the pitch. We’ve tried everything we can these last two weeks; we’ve got players in on loan and got dual registrations in when we’ve needed too when lads have been injured and suspended.

We’ve just been found wanting these last few weeks and it’s a shame and disappointing, but what I would say is that for the last two or three games I’ve been upset with the performances. I can’t really criticise us tonight as I thought everyone put a shift in.

It’s probably one of those games when if you get the first goal it’s different. At the top end of the pitch, at the sharp end we’re not quite getting things right. The decision making's dropped off and that comes with confidence. So, we need a goal there’s no doubt about that.

But there were a lot of better performances there tonight so I’m not going to go away too disheartened. We’ve got two more games to play, and the reality is we need the end of the season, we need the break and need to reset.

I’ll say as a management team we’ve lost some key players and spotted some frailties and the last three of four results that show us that. We already know what we need to do going into the summer.

We had ambitions this season to be in an around the play offs and we’ve not made it. we’ve had a solid season on the whole but it’s a shame we’ve finished on a downwards stretch and we’ve got two games left.

Maybe if we’d gone the other way and mid table and finished on a flyer, maybe we would have been a bit happier. So, I’m disappointed but in the next two games we’ll try to get a positive result or two.

It’s about being professional; you can’t always have it your own way. I’ve said to a few people there’s a fine line between reasons and excuses in football. I can come out here and tell you all about the things that have gone against us in the last few weeks that people don’t even know.

It looks like sour grapes and making excuses, so I won’t do that because we haven’t been good enough. We’ve had performances from individuals that haven’t been good enough.

But tonight, it didn’t feel that way because in was one of those games that could go either way although the score line doesn’t suggest it, but that’s where we are at the minute. We’ve had a backlog of games and at one point we were six or seven games in front of Dunston, and somehow ended up behind them just by missing Saturdays.

We’ve done everything right; we’ve trained Saturday mornings when we’ve been off; we’ve had the lads in every week, and we’ve not stopped. It’s not quite just worked for us the last couple of weeks, and we know what we need to do moving forwards.

The next couple of games are for the lads to show (what they can do), and it would have been easy tonight to leave the experienced lads on but I brought the young lads on so we could have a look.

I thought when Lewis and Ewan came on, we looked a better side for it, so credit to those lads who kept going; yes, we are disappointed, but that’s football.
