'I thought we got beaten by a far better team it’s as simple as that'

I thought we got beaten by a far better team it’s as simple as that, They were levels above us in the first half especially; we knew what they do, they play out and have got plan A and they stick to it.

We set ourselves up to stop that and for whatever reason we were again a yard off it, pressing too late, pressing in ones and twos, all the basics that you just do against good teams.

Again, we addressed it at half time and second half we came out and we were better, and we did have most of the ball which was mostly played in their half of the pitch, but by that point it looked too late because they looked sharp as well.

Spaces have to open up because of the way they played, the wide lads tuck in and make it a front three, the full backs push on massively high and they get big overloads in the midfield.

When you try and get really aggressive against them the game does open up, but I thought they were ten times more clinical around the box than we were.

We actually had a lot of the ball in and around the box in the second half and we’re chopping, we’re turning and going both ways. We just need to move the ball quicker.

We are disappointed but the first thing you have to do is credit them. They are a good team and are definitely in a false position, and I think they will be climbing the table very soon.

We obviously look internally ourselves and look at what we can do differently. I’m really not happy with application, desire, and the basics which you never have to question.

Even now you go in the dressing room and its flat, and I don’t expect it to be flat. You should be up for it and rallying round each other and maybe having a little go at each other and having a pop.

Its back-to-back disappointing games and I said earlier in the season when you lose one you can’t lose two, well we’ve lost two now back-to-back.

We’ve got to go again on Tuesday; we’re running on empty; we’ve had three lads out today injured, and a couple more limping off there and we’ll have to patch up a little bit.

Its not panic stations is it? Because it’s very early days still and we’re still up and around it but we can’t have many more days like the last two games if we’re going to be serious about what we’re doing.

The message (about Tuesday’s game at Carlton) is simple. I’ve just said to the players in the dressing room, and I say it all the time about this division. There are no poor sides; the last few games we’ve played teams who are in the bottom six at the moment and both turned us over.

If you aren’t at it 100% committed, you get beat its as simple as that. There’s too many good sides; they are organised, they are well drilled and the last few games, and I include the first half at Dunston as well, we haven’t started well enough.

In all three games we’ve been put to the sword in the first half. We were lucky (today) at half time to be just one nil; it could have been three or four. So, let’s make no bones about it we’ve hit the post in the second half, and we’ve had the ball in and around the box.

Harrison’s gone through and if he takes his chance earlier then you never know but did we deserve anything from that game, probably not. I just think we’ve got to be better all over the pitch, and I look internally at myself as well.

Did I pick the right team and shape, game plan and all the rest of it? But that same team has gone out and demolished teams already this season, so I want to see us respond. I think its cheap talk that we want to see a reaction in the next game and we go again.

I mean it; I want to see that they care, and they’ve got the desire to go and take this league by the scruff of the neck. We know what its like that anyone can beat anyone so let’s be better; lets be on it one hundred and ten percent because at the minute, I’m looking at a few basics.

Losing first contacts and they’ve put how many balls in the channel in the second half; losing first time headers under no pressure. We’re giving the ball away under no pressure and when we do get the ball in the final third we need to sharpen up.

It has to be better; the passes have to be better, the balls into the box have to be better. We’ve got to be more aggressive on the second balls; all of it has to be better, and that comes from me as I’ve signed these players and built the team.

We send them out week in week out, but it always stops with me, I know that its my responsibility, but I want more from the players as well because we’ve backed them, we’ve supported them and given a good environment to work in.

Then there’s the support and I don’t know how many were here today, but it was another good number, but we want more from the boys.

Lee Attenborough was talking to Tom Whewell.
