Manager's Assessment - Carlton Town

'I thought the first half was nothing short of a disgrace to be honest'

Chris Nelson from Belper Town Radio interviewed manager Lee Attenborough after his team’s disappointing result at Carlton Town.

I thought the first half was nothing short of a disgrace to be honest, we were absolutely miles off it. You’ve got to credit Carlton who started like a team who wanted it miles more than we did and that’s the thing that hurts me the most.

It’s not quality as that will always go up and down and what we can’t do is turn up to places and expect to roll teams over. Tonight, we looked like a poor side first half, and I’m not going to give them credit for the second half either because I expect more desire and a bit more grit.

We were like a bottom three side let alone top of the league so let’s not get carried away. We got too carried away with the last few weeks on where we are. We’ve got to improve big time there were one or two lads with body language I don’t like.

There’s too much walking around the pitch expecting things to drop to them. Carlton were at it and were hungry in the first half, but second half when we stuck to the game plan, we were better, and we showed that we could get in better areas and cause problems.

I’m getting a bit tired of reading the riot act every other week at half time. We’ve got to come more prepared to games in terms of attitudes, and it might sound as though I’m getting carried away because of where we are. I kept saying before a ball was kicked, would I take where we are, and I said yes, we would.

But I don’t like the manner of some defeats. I can accept it when we get carved open, but the first goal was Sunday league, and the second goal was Sunday league and from my perspective and my players I’m expecting miles better.

So, it was a bitter pill to swallow, but I credit the opposition as well. They did a job on us, and we have to move on quickly and try and put that right on Saturday.
