'We were just lackadaisical, we were second to everything and poor on the ball, poor in every area of the pitch really'

It was a crash back down to earth, and I think we maybe needed that. There were too many people on Saturday saying how great we were, and tonight was literally polar opposite.

We came out against a team tonight who basically outmanned us, and they scored first and sat back. They were wasting time from the 20th minute, and they’ve got the right to do that and fair play to them.

They came and did a job on us, and we produced no quality in the came (in fact) there was no quality from both sides apart from their first goal which was a hell of a strike. Sometimes you just have to say fair play, good goal.

We were just lackadaisical, we were second to everything and poor on the ball, poor in every area of the pitch really. I think football’s got a habit of doing that when you are on a roll and think you’ve got something going in the right direction and something like that happens.

So, its massively disappointing and you can’t dress it up in any other way and all you can do is apologise really. Yes, we looked so far off it, and you think is that a hangover from Saturday, but I think I’m being generous, and we’ve just got to be better it’s as simple as that.

I say to the lads all the time; there’s loads of good sides in this league but the best ones are consistent week in week out, but we can’t be too hard on ourselves because we have been consistent.

Even after tonight we’ve won eight from eleven so there’s no major problems, but we can’t turn up on a Saturday or a Tuesday not knowing what we’re going to get from the players. I felt that was what it was like tonight. A bit of a flash back to the back end of last season where you weren’t sure what Belper you were going to get.

When we went short, we were untidy with it and when we went long, we didn’t get around the second balls or whatever. But at the same time if you look at the balance of chances and the goalmouth action, we probably hit five or six square down the ‘keeper’s throat. We got a lot of first contacts from corners and free kicks and either didn’t follow it in or hit the target.

The balls into the box from corners a lot of the time were poor and we’re usually really good from that and I’m trying to go back over the game in my head. It’s just one thing after another and I could pick out a million things I’m not happy with.

The best thing to do is forget about that one as quickly as possible, scratch it and look at the league position tomorrow morning which actually isn’t too bad, and I said that after Cleethorpes when we lost the game, it’s really not that bad.

We’ve got to get to Saturday and produce something now!
