'it was an ugly game today and sometimes they are the best wins'

This time last year I think we would have been a lot more nervous than we’ve been today. A lot of our confidence comes from our two centre halves who are fantastic footballers and read the game so well. Anything aerially, they just come through and take the lot.

That gives you a lot of confidence, but it was an ugly game today and sometimes they are the best wins. The pitch is rock hard and its bouncy and bobbly and we scored, not quite from a set piece but the ball’s come out and recycled and Rawson scored with a brilliant header.

The game didn’t pan out as we expected it, because we thought they might come out and really get amongst us, and with the ball bouncing and being bobbly we thought they might get about the pitch and put pressure on us, but they kind of let us have it.

Sometimes on a poor surface you try and get in pockets and get on the ball and get on the half turn and make things happen, but forward passes become risky, and you get them cut out then you’re on the back foot and on the counterattack.

So, we had to pick our moments to play, which we could have done a bit more in the first half, but we got the goal and there were probably a couple of more break aways (from Sherwood) but didn’t really give up any chances. Dan’s not had a save to make other than bread and butter I would say.

And again, if we were a bit more clinical, we could have got another two or three at the other end. Listen, we’ve got a great group in there and its just about keeping the train rolling. We’ve got a two week break now from the league with the F A Cup next week and the Trophy the week after.

We wanted to go in on a positive; that’s two wins over the Bank Holiday weekend and we’ve managed to rest a couple of lads who had knocks today as well which helps and we still got the result. So, it’s all good.

Emley had their game abandoned so they are still bang up there and amongst it and Cleethorpes as well. Its so early in the season so we’re not too fussed about the table, and if we can get the performances right most of the time good performances manifest in good results. Sometimes its not the case but it usually is.

We will control our performances as best as we can, and I think our game management has got a little bit better. It’s a big well done today to our full backs. Paulo was exceptional going both ways, and Curt really stuck to his task and doesn’t let anyone turn him and just nibbles all the way through.

And just looking at Drapes up front; their two centre halves to be fair did a good job on him first half and they were giving him some right stick, but by ninety minutes the both of them were limping and missing every header under the sun so fair play to Drapes. He kept going and took loads of hits for us with Rawson running off him and we stretched them and caused problems all afternoon.

So good win, an ugly win which are sometimes the best, and now we move on.
