'I just thought that all over the pitch we were at it, and I could see us grow in confidence'

Chris Nelson from Radio Belper Town spoke to a happy Lee Attenborough following last night’s win at Liversedge.

I think that’s the best we’ve played for a very long time, and we played some very good football. Credit them (Liversedge), the pitch is good and allowed us to play our game and I’m just pleased for the lads.

We’ve been through the wringer this week with the results we’ve had. We’ve done seven hundred miles with three away games in five days, and it’s been really tough.

We’ve come here with thirteen players, and we’ve started Lewis (Austin) in there in central midfield; we’ve started Toby (Gregory), and Ewan (Sutherill) has come on.

I just thought that all over the pitch we were at it, and I could see us grow in confidence. We came in at half time at nil nil, and we were pleased with the performance, and we felt we just needed the goal which we have in the last two games.

Then we scored two of the best goals we’ve had all season in terms of team moves. So, there’s loads of positives from it and it’s nice to get the monkey off our back in terms of recent form.

We’ve had some tricky tests and the teams we’ve been to aren’t poor sides. We played Hebburn, and these have been on a really good run and snuck back up the table.
Yes, it’s a good result and we just want to finish now with a strong as we can performance on Saturday, and we’ll see what numbers we’ve got.

We’ve got about a day and a half, and they (Stockton) have had a week’s rest, so we know it’s going to be tough on Saturday, but it’s nice to get something positive tonight to roll into them.

Lewis has been brilliant all season. He’s been in and out of the team and I’ve said all along that I don’t mind Lewis not getting games as he’s been playing for the academy so it’s not like he’s rotting away there. He’s been keeping sharp and fit.

For such a young lad he’s got a mature head on his shoulders. We’ve gone for a four, four, two against their midfield three and I thought that him and Dec (Dunn) were superb. You couldn’t tell that they had an extra man as they were at it and all over them and didn’t give them a second on the ball.

In the 93rd minute he’s put a tackle in inside the box and scooping it down the line to get us out of trouble. Lewis was brilliant although Toby’s had a raw deal this year; he’s had hardly any chances and we’ve only really thrown him on when games have been dead, or we’ve been well in front.

So, we’ve not really been fair on him, and we’ve not had many chances to see him because we’ve had lots of important games where we have been in the table. But tonight, he looked like he’d played all season.

He was comfortable on the ball, and I like the way he moves it; he was comfortable on the ball; his little foot rolls, keeps defenders away from him and his use of the football is good. Toby’s to going grow physically, he’ll get quicker, he’ll get stronger.

His game understanding for someone his age after having only relatively had a few minutes is very good. We like the look of Ewan, he’s big, he’s awkward, he’s a little bit quick and he’s got a bit of everything.

Saturday might be another chance for him, but we’ll see, but he’s certainly someone through the course of pre-season well get a chance to look at. He’s done really well, and he set up the goal at the end, so it gives him a nice positive to finish on.
